Environmental Moon Jar by Simon Frend
Used coffee grounds, a handful of roasted beans, broadsheet newspaper, cogitation and beeswax polish.
This beautiful moon jar makes the perfect cremation urn for coffee lovers. Being handbuilt from coffee and newspaper, it is fully biodegradable and especially suitable for woodland or natural burial ground. It is highly tactile and has a unique, deep burnished patina and a background aroma of coffee.
All of the works from this environmental urn series encourage conservation, contemplation and connection with our natural environment. This ephemeral sculptural vessel speaks of closing the circle, through its materiality and biodegradability. On the practical front, this type of vessel provides the opportunity to plan a ceremony without the need to scatter ashes by hand, which can sometimes be more challenging than poetic or dignified, especially on a windy day.

This environmental urn is made specifically for a woodland or natural burial site. Placed in the ground, the natural materials of the urn will decompose and add organic materials to the soil and help to neutralise the ashes, thus minimising the environmental impact of the interment.
The moon jar is robust and very light weight. The stopper, which is made from the same material, is a good fit and can be permanently sealed by wetting it with a damp sponge and leaving to dry overnight.
