Brewing Vessel

£575.00

Environmental Moon Jar by Simon Frend

Brewers spent grain, dried hops and beeswax & hemp polish.

This unique moon jar cremation is handbuilt using the spent grain and hops from craft brewers - Boscombe Brewing Company. The artist tells us that he naturally sampled the beer when collecting the spent grain and vouches for its quality! Being made from all natural materials, it is fully biodegradable and is especially suited to a woodland burial and someone fond of a good pint. It is highly tactile and has a unique, burnished patina and a background aroma of hops.

All of the works from this environmental urn series encourage conservation, contemplation and connection with our natural environment. This ephemeral sculptural vessel evokes speaks of closing the circle, through its materiality. On the practical front, the naturally biodegradable nature of the vessel provides the opportunity to plan a ceremony without the need to scatter ashes by hand, which can sometimes be more challenging than poetic or dignified, especially on a windy day.

  • This environmental urn is made specifically for a woodland or natural burial site. Placed in the ground, the natural materials of the urn will decompose and add organic materials to the soil and help to neutralise the ashes, thus minimising the environmental impact of the interment.

The moon jar is robust and very light weight. The stopper, which is made from the same material, is a good fit and can be permanently sealed by wetting it with a damp sponge and leaving to dry overnight.
