End of the Promenade
Environmental Moon Jar by Simon Frend
Cuttlefish bone, gull feathers, mermaid’s purse, sand, cold fingers and seaweed.
This unique, ephemeral moon jar, is handbuilt using natural materials, collected by the artist from Southbourne Beach Dorset, especially for a water ceremony. It is a unique material which look a little like stone or travertin in particular. This vessel is the perfect cremation urn for someone with a close connection to this beach and is intended to be offered back to the sea in the same location. Placed in the water, the urn will dissolve in the time between tides, returning the moon jar and cremated remains to the environment without impact.
All of the works from this environmental urn series encourage conservation, contemplation and connection with our natural environment. This ephemeral sculptural vessel evokes a sense of place and speaks of closing the circle, through its materiality. On the practical front, the natural solubility of the vessel provides the opportunity to plan a ceremony without the need to scatter ashes by hand, which can sometimes be more challenging than poetic or dignified, especially on a windy day.

This environmental urn is made specifically for a dignified water ceremony on a sandy beach. It is designed to be placed at the furthest reaches of the sand at low tide, to be taken by the sea as the tide comes back in. Alternatively, it could be placed in to the water from a boat. The ceremony will return the materials of the urn to their origin and disperse the ashes at the chosen location with zero impact.
The moon jar is surprisingly robust and is a little like a ceramic material. The stopper, which is made from the same material, is a good fit but can be permanently sealed by wetting it with a damp sponge and leaving to dry overnight.
