Taxus Jar
Taxus Jar by Paul Reeves
This small (1.3 litres) Yew cremation jar is beautifully turned in a modern, simple form with screw on lid, by master-craftsman Paul Reeves. The jar makes a stunning memorial urn to be kept at home but being crafted entirely from wood, it is also suitable for interment in a natural burial ground, where it will gently biodegrade in the ground.
The wood for this vessel is from work to trim the overhanging branches of a yew in Ellingham churchyard. The figuring of the wood is a tapestry of intricate beauty, woven with lines, patterns and the occasional knot. As the eyes trace the grain, a sense of timelessness and wisdom emerges, revealing the essence of this sacred tree. Yew's figuring speaks a language of resilience and endurance, mirroring the journey of life itself.
Symbolically, yew holds profound significance in the realm of commemoration and remembrance. Long associated with mortality and rebirth, yew stands as a sentinel between realms, bridging the earthly and spiritual planes. Its figuring, with its interplay of light and dark, echoes the duality of life and death, reminding us of the cyclical nature of existence.
