Whitley Lake
Environmental Moon Jar Urn by Simon Frend
Sand, Common eelgrass and charcoal.
This evocative moon jar is handbuilt using natural materials gathered from the beach at Whitley Lake in Poole Harbour by the artist and would be a fitting urn for someone with a close connection to this beautiful area. It is designed especially for a water ceremony in this specific location and offered to the sea, it will dissolve in the time between tides, returning the moon jar and precious contents to the environment with zero impact.
All of the works from this environmental urn series encourage conservation, contemplation and connection with our natural environment. This ephemeral sculptural vessel evokes a sense of place and speaks of closing the circle, through its materiality. On the practical front, the natural solubility of the vessel provides the opportunity to plan a ceremony without the need to scatter ashes by hand, which can sometimes be more challenging than poetic or dignified, especially on a windy day.

This environmental urn is made specifically for a dignified water ceremony in Poole Harbour. We suggest that it is either placed at the water’s edge at low tide, to be taken by the sea as the tide turns, or lowered into the water from a boat. The water ceremony will return the materials of the urn to their origin and disperse the ashes with zero impact.
The moon jar is surprisingly robust and a little like ceramic. The stopper, which is made from the same material, is a good fit and can be permanently sealed by wetting it with a damp sponge and leaving to dry overnight.
